How to make an Instagram grid post.

  1. Choose a photo

Pick a photo with the main subject near the middle. Tall photos suit two or three rows; wide photos suit one row.

  2. Pick tile shape and rows

Instagram's profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles, so 3:4 tiles appear uncropped. Choose 1 to 5 rows of three.

  3. Make the tiles

The tool cuts the photo into 3, 6, 9, 12 or 15 tiles and numbers them in the order to post.

  4. Post in numbered order

Post tile 1 first and the highest number last. Instagram shows the newest post first, so the picture assembles from the bottom right.

Make the grid work.

Post them back to back

Another post in between shifts every tile by one place. Publish the whole set in one sitting.

Unpin first

Pinned posts sit at the top of the grid and push the picture out of line. Unpin them while you post, or plan around them.

Make each tile work alone

In the feed, followers see one tile at a time. Avoid tiles that are only sky or an empty wall.

Glassy for iPhone

Plan more than the grid.

Questions about grid posts.

Is the grid maker free?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no account. Everything happens in your browser.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your photos are processed on your own device by your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so the tools also work with private photos.

What order do I post the tiles in?

Post tile 1 first and continue in number order. Tile 1 is the bottom-right piece; the top-left piece is posted last, because Instagram shows the newest post first.

Why 3:4 tiles?

Instagram's profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles, so 3:4 tiles appear without cropping. Choose square tiles if you prefer the classic look; the grid then crops their sides.

Will the picture stay together when I post again?

Each new post shifts the grid by one place, so the picture moves out of line unless you post in multiples of three.

Is this an Instagram mosaic or grid planner?

It makes an Instagram mosaic, also called a puzzle or giant grid: one photo split across 3 to 15 posts. The preview works as a free grid planner for the set, showing the finished grid and the order to post before you share anything.
